ELECTION STRESS and MENTAL HEALTH
There were months of mixed emotions leading up to yesterday’s election: anxiety, fear, worry, optimism, pride, etc.
Today you woke up with the news that your candidate has won or not. Regardless of what you believe how the country will be in the next 4 plus years, you should consider that the stress leading up to the election results may have taken a toll in your mental health.
The American Psychological Association shared that in these past months, 69% of the population had suffered from anxiety and stress – from both side of the aisle – leading up to election results.
To restore your mental health, is very important that you:
- Detox from electronics/social media/tv news, etc.
To limit the “DoomScrolling” – and arguments with family and friends.
- Engage in a more health habits and distractions such as:
- Relaxation
- Meditation
- Reading a book
- Listening to music
…so you can feel calmer
- Limit conversations with friends, colleagues, family members about politics and future of country. It’s OK to set boundaries and take a break from all.
- Try to not taunt others, showing pride, and disdain.
- Try to be empathetic to people who may have deep and valid reasons to be worried, fearful, disappointed, and frustrated.
- Consult with a psychologist or mental health provider. It’s important to have support and feel you can talk openly without any judgment.
