• Celebrating Our Heritage: How Can We Accept Each Other?

As we commemorate Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th—a period deliberately chosen to honor the independence of numerous Central and South American nations from Spanish and Portuguese colonial rule—I find myself confronting a profound paradox. How can we authentically celebrate cultural diversity when our society struggles with fundamental acceptance of one another?

The irony is not lost on me: we speak of embracing other cultures while many find it increasingly difficult to embrace their fellow human beings. We advocate for openness to new perspectives while witnessing the proliferation of divisive rhetoric that fractures our communities. The current political discord, both domestically and globally, casts a shadow over what should be a joyous celebration of heritage and diversity.

What deeply troubles me is the prevalence of hatred directed toward individuals simply because of their beliefs, ideologies, or cultural backgrounds. The very differences that should enrich our collective human experience have become sources of division and animosity. I can only Imagine—to borrow from John Lennon’s timeless anthem—how particularly challenging this environment must be for those from diverse backgrounds and belief systems.

This reality compels me to extend beyond the traditional bounds of my practice. Today, I open both my office and digital spaces as sanctuaries for meaningful dialogue. Whether you seek to discuss the current state of our world, process personal disappointments, or simply find a confidential space to be heard, know that such a space exists.

As uncertainty clouds our future—including whether we will continue to have the privilege of celebrating Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month in years to come—I am moved to express profound gratitude. I thank both the divine and every individual who has entrusted me with their struggles, allowing me to help alleviate their anxieties and collaborate in finding solutions to their pain.

The work of psychology transcends mere therapeutic intervention. It involves offering alternative perspectives on life’s complexities, facilitating introspective journeys toward self-understanding, and empowering individuals to become their most authentic selves in an ever-evolving world. In these turbulent times, such work becomes not just professional duty, but moral imperative.

Perhaps the answer to “How can we accept each other?” begins with the courage to engage in honest dialogue, the willingness to listen without judgment, and the recognition that our shared humanity transcends our differences. In celebrating heritage—any heritage—we celebrate the rich tapestry of human experience that makes our world both beautiful and complex.
